these images appeared in the two person exhibition titled "intersections". the exhibit was a show in which my mother and i presented an installation of pieces, my photographs and her jewelry and paintings, all under the general theme of our choosing, "intersections" and our individual, visual interpretation of this idea.
the show ran in november and december of 2009 at Maryville University in Saint Louis.
the following is my artist statement for the exhibition:
"This grouping of photographs, titled “Intersection”, came about based upon themes that stood out to me, running through my personal world and into the world I have observed around me.
The merging of past and present, old and new, adaptation and transition, in relation to thought patterns, people significant in one’s life, major and minor choices made and their effects, these concepts have been at the forefront of my thoughts for the past several years and especially now.
Major shifts in our world, our optimism and progress as a nation, and our economy, have all deeply affected our collective conscious and our individual attitudes.
All of this boils down to what we are faced with now, merging past choices and concepts with the reality of their outcomes, our present place to plan and prepare for the future, and exist and grow in the now.
This merging, or intersection of old and new started to visually appear to me within my surroundings. I noticed the intertwining of nature, our world’s traditional landscape, and our imposed landscape of man made material. Trees that are embraced by power lines, foliage that curves into and on a fence, concrete and steel intersecting with and mapping off a river’s path. These photographs that I took to explore ideas of the intersection of nature’s landscapes, and our man made additions, are not only visually stimulating and beautiful to my mind’s eye. They represent current world topics, and more personal topics of growth and youth vs. adulthood, and the reconciliation of my own past and present circumstances.
Hopefully these images will strike a cord with the viewer’s own interpretation of intersection, or another concept that these photos may meaningfully relate to in one’s own world of symbols and significance."
